Indigenous populations in the Peruvian Amazon struggle to maintain traditional knowledge in the face of modern environmental challenges.
by Chiara ZappalĂ
Due to polluted water, indigenous peoples in the Peruvian Amazonia have converted their traditional knowledge to techniques imported from outside, from so-called developed countries. The ecosystem balance nowadays is broken: the people are no longer able to read the signs of the river in order to fish. So, they have ended up making pools for fishes and breeding them in-vitro, in close cooperation with European NGOs (in this case the Italian Terra Nuova). Is this a good solution? Is this process reversible? Will Rio+20 contribute to answering to these questions?
